General Information on Undergraduate Program
The Department of Psychology undergraduate program was founded in 1959 and the first students graduated in 1964. The Department of Psychology undergraduate program has been accredited by the Turkish Psychological Association in 2013. The first graduate programs started in 1982. The Department of Psychology offers courses for the undergraduate and graduate programs in psychology; offers students from other departments a minor degree in psychology; and offer courses to students of other departments to broaden their understanding of psychological phenomena. Faculty members together with graduate and undergraduate students conduct cutting-edge research that span the fields of clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, industrial, work, and organizational psychology, social psychology, and traffic and transportation psychology.
Vision statement: Being a national leader and a world-renowned institute in psychology education, research, and in serving the public.
Mission statement: The Department of Psychology has three missions related to a) Education, b) Research, and c) Serving the public.
a) Education: To provide undergraduate students with extensive theoretical knowledge related to the major sub disciplines of Psychology, skills related to scientific research and thought, ethical principles related to psychological practice, evaluation, and research and to raise students sensitive to societal needs. To provide graduate students with basic knowledge and skills of the scientist-practitioner model and to raise potential academicians.
b) Research: Conducting rigorous scientific research and contributing to the national and international dissemination of scientific knowledge related to the various sub disciplines of psychology via journal/book publications and conference presentations. Conducting scientific research that would serve national needs. Increasing interdisciplinary research.
c) Serving the public: Dissemination of the scientific knowledge to the public via vocational training, counseling, seminars, and the media.
PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Outcomes
- Solid background in basic theories and approaches in psychology.
- Skills to obtain and interpret new information in the light of acquired theoretical knowledge.
- Skills to follow both national and international publications and developments in the discipline.
- Basic applied skills and knowledge of the various disciplines of psychology that do not require specialization.
- Awareness of the value of continuing educational practices such as in-service training, seminars, and conferences to keep career-relevant knowledge and skills up-to-date.
- Skills to conduct research based on basic knowledge related to testing and measurement, research methods, and statistics. That is, skills related to forming research hypotheses, designing the research, collecting data, applying basic statistical analysis, and reporting.
- Knowledge and skills about conducting research and practice by adhering to ethical guidelines.
- Skills in oral and written communication both in Turkish and English.
- Skills to work in teams that involve disciplinary and interdisciplinary projects.
- Critical thinking skills in following the psychological literature together with the psychology-related information appearing in popular media.
- Skills to generate practical and culture-sensitive solutions to problems.
- Awareness of societal, environmental, and economic factors in professional practice and research.
- Skills to lead and pioneer in the profession of psychology, either in academia or professional practice.
- Skills in independent and team work.
