General Information on Undergraduate Program
The aim of this professional degree program is to educate and train architects who are capable of practicing within their field in both the national and the world-wide context. The objectives are those stated in the UIA/UNESCO Charter for Architectural Education and by the Commission of the European Communities; namely, acquiring multi-dimensional knowledge and understanding of architecture is pursued through courses in the following study areas:
- Fundamentals of design and visual communication
- Architectural design and theory,
- Building science and technology
- History of architecture
- Landscape design and planning
- Urban studies and design
- Conservation of Cultural Heritage
- Professional practice
The bachelor program in architecture, affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture, is based on a four-year study (including four-month summer practice in total), which is structured around design studios, supported by compulsory and elective courses on the tracks of "design and theory", "history" and "technology". Architectural design studio courses, considered as the core of the program, are aspired to be the melting pot of studies in the variety of courses.
The following are the program outcomes:
Outcomes
- Ability to establish connections between the discipline of architecture and its related areas of competence, with the cultural and social aspects of architectural production.
- Gaining, evaluating and applying the technical, aesthetic and ethical dimensions of the knowledge and values of architecture with a scientific and critical approach.
- Making analysis and synthesis of data by employing theories, methods and currents of thought that aid in the identification and solution of architectural design problems.
- Developing creative and original ideas into the stages of theoretical design, projects, application and evaluation of architectural services and realizing them independently as well as in a team.
- Being able to effectively use the traditional and digital communication technologies and visual expression tools.
- Providing leadership to achieve synthesis through a productive coordination of the scientists and professionals of different disciplines taking part in the formation of the built environment.
- Being open to lifelong education by internalizing world experiences related to architectural thought and applications and following new developments.
- Understanding the requirements of environmental, cultural and economic sustainability in both global and local scales and considering them in all professional activities.
- Defending the society's rights to shelter, within nature and city applying universal principles and resisting applications that are against professional ethics and laws while creating unique solutions and putting them into practice.

Elective Course Category Description
Students are expected to take and successfully complete 10 elective courses prior to graduation with B.Arch. degree.
One course has to be taken from each of the following three groups of elective courses on “Design and Theory”, “History”, and “Technology”, making a total of three required elective courses. Three of the elective courses have to be taken from other METU departments, or from other universities (in Turkey or abroad), all of which have to be on related subjects (excluding performance based courses such as foreign languages, music, etc.) and approved by the Department. Students are to choose the remaining four elective courses from among the courses offered by the department.
