Course Content

This course is intended to provide students with a general understanding of the process of European integration, more specifically developments in the European Union (EU) in a historical perspective. The course begins with an analysis of the basic motives and forces behind the establishment of the Union. It then turns to look at the major theoretical approaches for examining the nature of the integration process and the character and functioning of the Union. On the basis of this theoretical framework, the course provides an account of developments in the main institutions and policy areas and of the key issues confronting the Union and examines how the EU is evolving and how it is likely to develop in the years ahead.

Course Content

The course aims at providing an introduction for the law and institutions of the European Union (EU). Since European Union is a unique institution based on its directly applicable rules which prevail the national laws of the Member States, the legal aspects of the European Union studies forms the core of the EU related courses as this would provide a sound basis for the students to understand the functioning, policies and the future of the European Union. This legal course shall comprise of certain discussions in matters such as the legal rules governing the composition and functioning of the organs, sources of the EU law and basic principles of EU law and the judicial review of the EU sources. Following institutional law of the EU, the legal basis of Turkey-EC relations, including but not limited to the Association Agreement and the customs union decision of the Association Council No 1/95 will also be covered in the discussions.

Course Content

This course aims to give an overall understanding on the fundamentals and the dynamics of the politics of migration in Europe. By the end of this course the student is expected to gain an understanding of the theories, historical developments and the complexities regarding the politics of international migration. Overall, the course aims to give a general introduction to migration studies, as well as to understanding the importance of international migration on a global and a national level.

Course Content

This course is designed as a graduate seminar with the overall aim of enabling the students to achieve a critical understanding of the European Union environmental policy. Main topics will include the EU structure and institutions in the context of environmental policies, framework for EU environmental policy and specific topics of environmental policies, such as climate change, biodiversity, water pollution and sustainable development. Particular attention will also be given to the European Unions adoption and implementation of a variety of environmental policy measures and examples of how environmental objectives can be integrated into other policy areas.

The principles and rules of EU and Turkish public procurement law; EU directives on public procurement; Turkish Public Procurement Act; soft law instruments in the field of public procurement under the EU law and Turkish Law; Public-Private Partnerships (concessions, build-operate-transfer projects particularly in the construction of roads, highways, railways and airports, electric powers, water transport, waste management and water distribution); legal remedies in the field of public procurement.

Following a broader approach to security in line with critical approaches to security, the course will introduce the issues and concepts in European Union Foreign, Security and Defence Policies in a way that brings together theory and practice. Thus, the course aims to provide the students with the necessary knowledge and skills to apply theoretical concepts to cases and critically examine European Union Foreign, Security and Defence Policies.

This course aims to provide students with a general assessment of research design within social sciences with a specific focus on area studies. It will present the students various qualitative methods and research designs involved in social scientific issues. By presenting key discussions from the philosophy of social sciences followed by discussions on research design, the course will help the students reflect to analyze different research designs methods used in the prominent works of area studies. It will also include assignments that will demand from the student the use of several research methods for an original topic of their choosing. The course will hence encourage both reflective thinking on social scientific research in area studies as well as key methodological issues.

The aim of this course is to provide graduate students an understanding of the different ways how the agency problems are responded through corporate governance in the EU context. Course will cover basic concepts regarding the EU Company Law and Corporate Governance Harmonisation Programme, main corporate governance strategies (Trusteeship/Reward) formulated to overcome Principle-Agent Problem, shareholder and stakeholder theories and their effects in the EU policy on corporate governance approaches, EU common framework on corporate governance and discussions on the future and the policy of the EU in terms of corporate governance.

General principles of international human rights law, European Human Rights Convention, definiton of human rights, the basic mechanisms for enforcing human rights and the role of the political realities in promoting human rights. The principles and rules Turkish human rights and ombudsman law, Turkish Human Rights Act, secondary legislation in the field of human rights under the Turkish Law, legal remedies in the field of human rights in Turkish law.

This course aims at introducing and analytically discussing the current and emerging issues in European politics and governance. In this course, the students will get acquainted with the current events, trends and developments at the European level and will be able to analyse those in light of the theoretical approaches and knowledge acquired from other courses of the programme. All in all, this course will look at issues of central significance to the European politics, by focusing on interrelated perspective of politics, policies, economy, governance and external relations.

This course aims at bringing into discussion the current dynamics, actors and events in Turkey-EU relations. The course objective is to broaden the perspective of the students on Turkey-EU relations by providing them a variety of theoretical approaches and events to better understand and evaluate the course and current state of the relations. In this regard, the course first provides different perspectives and theoretical discussions on how to analyse Turkey-EU relations, such as Europeanisation/De-Europeanisation; Differentiated Integration, Critical Political Economy.
