Vector-tensor algebra. Shell balances for momentum, energy and mass transport. Polymer melt rheology. Non-Newtonian and viscoelastic flows of polymeric materials. Heat transfer and diffusion in macromolecular media. Development of velocity, temperature and concentration profiles in macromolecular media. (R)

Course Content

Design criteria of plastics processing equipment, dies, molds and plasticating screws. Modelling and analysis of particulate solids handling, change of state and melt pumping. Polymer melt flow in channels and cavities. Extrusion, injection molding, blow molding calendering, thermoforming, composites processing and secondary operations, welding, adhesion, fastening, decoration and machining of plastics. (R)

Composites with continuous and discontinuous reinforcement. Theories of reinforcement. Rheological and mechanical properties. Methods of blending blends. Structure-property relations in blends. The role of additives in plastics processing and plastic products. Modifiers for processing, mechanical, optical, surface and aging characteristics. (R)

PST508 CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES FOR POLYMERIC MATERIALS 3 1.00 4.00 8.0

Course Content

Characterization techniques for polymers and other related materials, Thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimeter, thermo-gravimetric analyzer, differential thermal analyzer, dilatometer.) Particle size measurement using laser diffraction and photon correlation spectroscopy, and zeta potential measurement. Rheological characterization techniques (rheological models, capillary viscometer, rheometer, dynamic mechanical analyzer.) Mechanical testing of polymeric materials (tensile testing, compression testing, bending testing (3 point and 4 point), creep test, impact test, hardness testing (nano, micro and macro). X-ray diffraction.
