Course Content

The course has the double purpose of introducing the student to a multidisciplinary examination of historical conditions, cultural norms and social institutions that define women's role in different societies and reviewing the evolution of women's studies as a discipline with emphasis on those theories and perspectives that allow for interdisciplinary study of women and gender. It includes a general survey of social research on gender differences, gender stratification and the gendered nature of politics, religion, occupations, family life and language.

GWS502 THE WOMAN QUESTION IN TURKEY 3 3.00 0.00 8.0

Course Content

The course attempts to examine under which circumstances a discourse of the woman question has emerged in Turkey. In this way, the course aims to examine interdisciplinary contributions which serve to explore the living conditions, social status and interpersonal relations of women along social class, political participation, occupational status, educational level and rural-urban residence dimensions so as to comprehend the conceptual parameters of the woman question in Turkey.

Course Content

Peace is often understood as the absence of conflict, rather than the absence of potential for conflict. The latter is called positive peace that is present only in the absence of inequalities. The proposed course adopts the latter view developed by Johan Galtung and focuses on gender inequalities. While focusing on the issues of positive peace and gender at various levels (international, national, institutional, familial and individual), the course draws simultaneously on both Galtung`s typology on peace and the idea that peace (non-violence) in the World cannot be achieved unless peace (non-violence) is achieved at home, and vice versa.

Course Content

This course aims to prepare students towards designing their thesis project. Within this context the focus of the course would be on the application of basic qualitative and quantitative methods to the specific topic at hand. The students would be required to evaluate and integrate these methods so far as they are applicable to their thesis proposal which would be presented for discussion at a seminar open to 8100 faculty and students at the end of the term.

To examine gendered identities in the representative works by and about women; to read, analyse, and discuss diverse identity and socialization processes that determine gender roles; to recognize the on-going dialogue of women and politics, literature, history, art, anthropology, and psychology; to identify motifs, themes, and stereotypical patterns in different literary forms; to seek for historical, philosophical and cultural information in order to appreciate literature; to analyse, interpret and make research on concepts such as sex, gender, class, cultural diversity, women’s experiences and achievements, and the impact of sexism and prejudice; to perceive the role of gender in literature in a chronological and from multidimensional perspective.

Course Content

The course deals with the co-constitution of gender and cities at both theoretical and empirical levels. While dealing with the co-constitution of gender and cities, the course aims to take a critical look at cities. This is done by employing four concepts, namely `daily life,` `intersectionality,` `standpoint` and `multiple economies.` At the same time, the course looks into the relevant literature on cities and gender in Turkey both in terms of co-constitution of gender and cities and through the employment of the four concepts.

Course Content

While there remains a range of competing understanding of civil society, dominant approach to this political concept is gender-biased and neo-liberal in character. This course provides a critical approach to the dominant character of civil society by focusing on feminist reactions/critique. Overall the main aim of this course is to examine the relationships between gender and civil society. Furthermore, this course discusses the ways in which feminists challenge and show resistance to masculine and neoliberal civil society and reconstruct the arena of civil society through drawing attention to the neglected experiences.

Course Content

This course is about the politics of body revolving around gender,sex,sexuality,visibility,beauty,nationalism,discipline,fashion. The particular purpose of this course is to familiarize students with analytical approaches and cases to body politics, the differentiated bodily representations and the power practices through the body. As a graduate level seminar, this course offers varied perspectives regarding the control and reconstruction of body/bodies. Additionally, the course will be taught by a combination of assigned texts and interactive discussions. Each week we will dwell on two-four texts and explore the concepts and related insights. On the successful completion of this course, the students will be able to develop critical self-understanding of their perceptions, discuss about their ideas and experiences, and work with the others to achieve common goal.

GWS510 WOMENS HUMAN RIGHTS IN TURKEY THE EU AND THE WORLD 3 0.00 3.00 8.0

Course Content

The term women’s human rights (WHR) and the set of practices accompanying it have been at work for some decades, and very transformative as a result of the term serving as a locus of praxis. Despite their transformative power, they have been questioned in various ways in relation to the end of achieving greater gender equality. The course aims to relate to the term and accompanying practices in a self-reflexive fashion. First, either WHR and its practices or existing practices from within the perspective of WHR will be explored. Second, a critical analysis of the practices in question will be engaged .As part of this, the course deals with various relevant legal texts at the levels of the international, the EU and Turkey.

Course Content

This course concentrates mainly on theory and methodology specific to feminist knowledge. The purpose of the course is first to question various images, representations, ideas and presumptions of the traditional theories developed about women, second, to engage with questions of the procedures for evaluating scientific knowledge, incorporating the discussions on the feminist positions of methodology in social sciences.

Course Content

This course aims at examining the treatment of women under the country's legal framework both as the law is written and as it is carried out in practice in the light of traditions and culture. It attempts to identify specific legal constraints to the ability of women to contribute to the development process and to indicate and discuss the remedial measures. In this context, the relevant provisions of the 1982 Constitution, Civil Law and Laws on Political Rights of Women are analyzed and discussed.

This course attempts to help students to critically examine the gender bias of development in the underdeveloped world where incorporation into cash economy has systematically created asymmetric relations. Focus is on the differential access, of men and women to new technology, knowledge and opportunities, and identification of the mechanisms through which womens work becomes devalued and how women are driven back into the domestic sphere and hence domesticated.

The course interrogates feminist theories and vocabularies from the perspectives of the non-West, often illustrated by the Indian experience. It builds upon understandings of colonialism, the nationalist imaginery and feminist critiques of development paradigms. Along with the discussion of rights based discourses and those on the Uniform Civil Code, as well as challenges to Middle Class Womens Movements that have emerged from below, the course interrogates concepts such as agency, feminist perspectives on globalization and Islamic Feminism.

This course aims to examine critically the concept of biopolitics on everyday politics and gendered relations. In this context, its particular purpose is to familiarize students with theoretical and analytical approach to the concepts of biopolitics/biopower and gender. As a graduate level seminar, this course offers a way in which the perspective of biopolitics and issues on population, body, womanhood can be operationalized in order to shed light on the repercussions of political and economic discursive practices on the everyday gendered expectations. Throughout the classes, particular attention-ts given to Michel Foucault`s literature and secondary literature, providing the students an introductory re-reading basic sources of biopolitics and relevant discussions. Additionally, the course will be taught by a combination of assigned texts and interactive discussions. Each week we will dwell on one or two texts and explore the concepts and related arguments.

Course Content

The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with individual research-paper and/or report writing. The students are expected to choose a well-defined theoretical and/or applied research topic in the area of gender and women`s studies and to write a term paper elaborating on a specific viewpoint after reviewing the relevant literature during the semester under the supervision of a faculty member. The students will present and discuss their papers with fellow students and related faculty member at the end of the semester.
