Ph.D. in English Literature

The program aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of English literature; to enable students to investigate the relationships between literature and intellectual trends, and also to enable students to develop a critical approach to literature.

Outcomes

  • analyze a wide range of theoretical and literary selections from different periods of British literature.
  • identify the major sociological, cultural, philosophical and aesthetic characteristics of the main periods of British literature such as the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Romantic and Victorian periods, and the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
  • compare British and non-British literary texts from within relevant historical, cultural, aesthetic and theoretical contexts.
  • do critical readings of contemporary non-British literatures with emphasis on multicultural and multiethnic writers.
  • follow major trends and discussions in world literature.
  • identify the major literary and cultural theories from classical antiquity to the twenty first century.
  • articulate ideas and responses against the backdrop of different literary and cultural theories.
  • practice skills that will enable them to analyze non-linguistic textual materials such as films, iconic signs, cultural elements and rituals with theoretical awareness.
  • articulate meaningful and critical ideas and responses in literary and cultural discussions.
  • compose critical essays of high academic standard on the texts studied in class.
  • collaborate with other students in different literary and cultural projects.
  • contribute to the field of literary studies by producing academic papers built on independent and in-depth research.
