Course Objectives

The main objectives of the course are:

  • to introduce students the conceptual and contextual interactions of museums and heritage places
  • to engage students in the critical analysis and interpretation of heritage places and their relationship with museums
  • to provide basic knowledge of the historical trajectory of museums and heritage places

Course Content

Conceptual and contextual relationship between museums and heritage places; theoretical approaches, practical methods, and scholarly debates about museums and heritage places; historical trajectory of museums and heritage places; presenting historic buildings as museums; adaptive-reuse of historic buildings as museums; historic museums as heritage places; historic house museums; museumification of contested heritage places; open-air museums; intangible heritage; museums in historic cities; museums as urban regenerators; culture-led urban regeneration; museum quarters/clusters; cultural quarters, theme parks; disneyfication; musealisation


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  • develop an understanding of the theoretical approaches, practical methods, and scholarly debates about the changing relationships of museums and heritage places
  • think critically about the boundaries between museums and heritage places
  • situate different cases from Turkey within the global discussions of museums’ effects on heritage places
