Course Objectives

The course aims to:

  • Teach and/or increase the knowledge of students on advanced manufacturing techniques
  • Teach the basic history of additive manufacturing techniques and their evolution
  • Explain the theory and application behind different additive manufacturing techniques
  • Experience the machinery first-hand with visits to various locations that house these technologies.

Course Content

Overview of 3D additive manufacturing methods used in prototyping and manufacturing. Theoretical understanding of various additive manufacturing techniques, their applications, and limitations. Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing machines. Considerations for designing for additive manufacturing through in-class exercises and assignments.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Know the short history of additive manufacturing at the industrial scale
  • Learn about all the possible additive manufacturing technologies and their current use cases
  • Understand the industrial use of the additive manufacturing process
  • Understand the requirements of designing for additive manufacturing
  • Contemplate on future use cases of industrial additive manufacturing
