Course Objectives
The course aims at giving the students an opportunity to experience individual scholarly research on traditional building materials. The student chooses a research topic of a single building, or group of buildings. The study is based on site survey and documentation, library research on this chosen research topic, research on others from the same settlement, same period and other. Two – three weeks are given for each research project and the students make a presentation of their projects at the end of this time. The seminar presentation is aimed at making the students get familiar in presenting their research topic in a given time, 15-20 minutes, but in a holistic format. This presentation is followed with a written report.
Priority is given to students who have already taken Cons 553 or 554 and acquired a basic knowledge on the traditional building materials used in Anatolian architecture from the early bginnings to the 17th century. acapurse is conducted in different formats based on the research interest of the students:
A.Book research or litrature survey
B.Case studies based on field surveys, for practical reasons exercsed mostly in Ankara. this topic has varietiessuch as a single building or a group of period buildings can be stydied by a group of studentsç Or each student can choose a different topic.
Course Content
For doctoral students interested in the study of specific problems related to traditional building materials used in the monumental buildings of the medieval period in Anatolia.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to acquire knowledge for in-depth research on traditional building materials encountered on historic buildings especially in Anatolia . the students will be able to develop an awareness for their detailed documentation oin restoration studies.
If the case study is related to the students PhD thesis, experience how to make research on a tyopic related to building materials in historic buildings, where and how to acquire information for these materials. Excersice a specific research within a given format, make oral and written presentations at the end of that time.
