Course Objectives

This course covers the basic aspects of history and the theory of conservation of cultural heritage. By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • understand and define the current concerns for the conservation of cultural heritage in different geographies. 
  • relate the current conservation issues with the contemporary social, political, economic, cultural, and physical context and events, together with the reflections on and the responses of the conservation field;
  • analyze the leading paradigms and parameters in the conservation of cultural heritage;
  • consider the tendencies, priorities, and challenges for current issues in heritage studies influenced by various factors;
  • interpret and discuss the position and politics of research in the conservation of cultural heritage;
  • institute a critical framework for reflecting on the issues that influence conservation theory and practice in different countries, including Turkey.

Students who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:

  • identify the current concerns for the conservation of cultural heritage in relation to the contemporary global | international | national | and local context and events;
  • correlate the impacts of social, economic, and political context and forces with current conservation theory and practice;
  • analyze and interpret the leading paradigms and parameters in the conservation of cultural heritage;
  • examine the tendencies, priorities, and challenges for current issues in heritage studies influenced by various factors;
  • appraise the position and politics of research in the conservation of cultural heritage;
  • assess and critique the reflections on the range of issues that influence conservation theory and practice in different countries, including Turkey.

9Shares the findings and results of the studies carried out in the field of cultural heritage and conservation, and the knowledge and methods underlying them, with expert and non-expert groups in an open and systematic manner (in both Turkish and English).
10Shares the results of a research or project on cultural heritage conservation in national and/or international settings (in both Turkish and English).
11Considers social, scientific and cultural norms in the stages of collecting, interpreting, implementing and announcing data related to the field of cultural heritage conservation; observes ethical values; pioneers for change.
