Course Objectives
The course aims to raise students' awareness of the particulars of syntactic derivations, to enable them to make hypotheses regarding the processes involved in such derivations and to motivate such processes by assuming certain well-formedness criteria for the resulting syntactic representations. The course is also meant to enable students to understand morphological processes and their interaction with both syntax and phonology, to perform morphological and morpho-syntactic analyses on linguistic data and recognize predictions of various morpho-syntactic theories.
Course Content
This course will discuss the main questions and some of the discoveries in the field of formal study of language, with an emphasis on morpho phonology and syntax, and the interface between the two. The focus will be on the hierarchical organization of language and the way this organization yields similarities in phenomena coming from completely unrelated languages.
Since the study of language involves learning not only facts about language but also the procedures used in discovering these facts, the course will consist of both lecture/discussion and problem-solving /analysis sessions in which linguistic data are examined to illustrate linguistic principles and concepts.
Course Learning Outcomes
Successful students will be able to recognize how hypotheses and theories discussed in the lectures contribute to explanations of various linguistic processes. They will also be able to conduct linguistic analyses pertaining to various modules of linguistic competence (primarily syntax and morphology), relate theories to observable data and make inferences about how to extend these findings to practice.
