Course Objectives
This course aims to
- Develop a critical understanding of the principles, theories, and practices underlying the evaluation and development of instructional materials for English language teaching.
- Equip students with the analytical tools necessary to evaluate a wide range of ELT materials, including textbooks, digital resources, and supplementary materials, in relation to learners' needs and educational contexts.
- Enable students to design and develop effective, contextually relevant, and pedagogically sound ELT materials that support communicative and learner-centered approaches to language learning.
- Foster awareness of the sociocultural, political, and ethical dimensions of materials selection and production, including issues of representation, bias, and inclusivity.
- Promote reflective practice and innovation in the creation, adaptation, and integration of materials to enhance learner engagement and language development.
- Encourage the use of current research, digital technologies, and authentic resources in the creation of dynamic and meaningful learning experiences for diverse language learners.
Course Content
Reviewing methods of evaluating language teaching materials and adaptation techniques and applying evaluation and adaptation criteria to materials currently employed; determining appropriate discovery procedures for developing effective language teaching materials through applied research.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Critically evaluate commercially produced and teacher-developed ELT materials using established theoretical frameworks and evaluation criteria.
- Demonstrate understanding of key principles in materials design, including authenticity, learner-centeredness, inclusivity, cultural relevance, and alignment with curriculum goals.
- Analyze learner needs, contexts, and profiles to inform materials selection, adaptation, and development for specific teaching environments.
- Design and develop original ELT materials that are pedagogically sound, contextually appropriate, and aligned with language learning objectives and assessment practices.
- Adapt existing materials to better suit learners' levels, interests, learning styles, and sociocultural contexts.
- Integrate digital tools and multimedia resources effectively in the development of interactive and engaging language learning materials.
- Engage in reflective practice to assess the effectiveness of designed materials and make informed revisions based on feedback and classroom implementation.
