Course Objectives

By the end of the course students will

1. be equipped with the skill to translate from Turkish into English both when studying and working

2. be encouraged to do research when translating from Turkish into English


Course Content

Intermediate work in translating texts from Turkish into English in three stages: (a) starting with samples including the basic structures in English at sentence level, (b) moving on to short paragraphs in which these structures are found in more complex form, (c) exposing students to short essays covering a wide variety of subjects as representative as possible of the styles and registers found in contemporary written Turkish.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will

1.  learn the “characteristics of an adequate translation” (Sayed-Ali Miremadi)

2.  learn the “characteristics of a competent translator” (Sayed-Ali Miremadi)

3.  learn the “semantic” and “communicative” theories of translation (Peter Newmark)

4.  understand the meaning of a Turkish writing in order to translate it

5.  produce English translations that  are both “faithful” and “beautiful”

6.  produce English translations that reflect the meaning of the Turkish writing

7.  produce English translations that are meaningful, natural and grammatically correct

8.  produce English translations where the punctuation marks are used correctly

9.  use comprehensive English-English and Turkish-Turkish dictionaries when translating

10. use  thesauruses and dictionaries of collocations when translating

11. use the Internet when translating

12. think critically of the meanings and collocations of English words before choosing them for  the English translations

13. realize that not only dictionaries but also knowledge of the English culture will help to translate into English

14. see the similarities and differences between the Turkish and English languages

15. write the most appropriate English translations

16. realize that as a translator, students bear the important responsibility of making a Turkish passage meaningful in their English translation if, in Turkish, it is not

17. reinforce students’ knowledge of the Turkish and English languages

18. associate words in Turkish, English and any other language that students may know to translate into English

19. benefit from meaning and knowledge of English words in the students' departments when choosing the words for translation 

20. enlarge students’ Turkish and English vocabulary
