Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to assure the student develop his/her ability to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. By the end of this course, students can express themselves on the studied topics using everyday expressions and basic formulas.
Course Content
This course is the second of Spanish language courses offered by METU Modern Languages. Admission to this course is reserved for those who have studied the beginning level Spanish course (Spanish 201 (A1.1)). For the students who did not study this course at METU, but have the necessary knowledge, the acceptance depends on the course capacity availability. In this course students continue to develop and improve their writing, reading, oral expression and comprehension skills. Emphasis will be placed on essential grammatical structures and the development of basic communication skills on the topics of content. The course is offered in fall and spring semesters and in the summer school as well.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course students will be able to:
- talk about habits, express frequency and the order in which we do actions, as well as to ask and tell the time. For this purpose, grammar-wise, we will review the present tense of some verbs and we will see some new regular and irregular verbs, as well as some reflexive verbs used in the context of this unit. As for new vocabulary, we will review the days of the week and see the parts of the day and daily activities.
- ‘survive’ in cafés and restaurants, to ask information about food and to talk about eating habits. For this purpose, we will learn the impersonal usage of verbs with ‘se’, the verbs “poner” and “traer”, as well as the direct object pronouns (lo, la, los, las). Vocabulary-wise, we will learn the meals on a day, the names of ingredients and some typical dishes from Spain and Latin America, as well as the different ways of cooking food.
- describe neighborhoods, villages and cities and to talk about what we like the best and the least about a place. In addition, we will study how to ask and give directions. Concerning the grammar in this unit, the quantifiers (algún, ningún...) and the prepositions and adverbs for indicating place will be learnt. Finally, vocabulary-wise, we will learn the services and places in a city as well as some adjectives to describe a neighborhood.
- talk about previous experiences, to talk about abilities and also to talk about the qualities and the negative aspects of a person. As for the new grammatical content in this units, we will see the present perfect tense and the verbs “saber” and “poder”. Concerning vocabulary, we will see some frequency expressions and adjectives of character.
