Course Objectives

The overall goal of the course is to develop students' ability to master every-day situations in a Arabic-speaking environment.

Before starting to learn Arabic language, students are required to learn Arabic alphabet.  The objectives of the course are to develop basic communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary expansion, basic grammar acquisition and basic comprehension.

 

By the end of the course, students will be able to

 

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • introduce themselves  and others.
  • ask and answer questions such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Course Content

An introduction to the Arabic alphabet, phonetic and grammatical rules and basic Arabic vocabulary.


Course Learning Outcomes

After completion of this course the students will have finished the level A1.1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At the end of the course the students will be able to:

 

  • establish basic social contact (greetings and farewells; introductions; asking how people are; saying please, thank you, sorry etc.);
  • describe him/herself, what he/she does and where and how he/she lives;
  • name the professions;
  • handle spelling
  • ask for or pass on personal details in written form (a short massage, an e-mail or a postcard);
  • understand instructions;
  • understand and extract information from simple listening and reading texts using a range of strategies.
