Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are the following:

  • Describe the role of separations in biotechnological processes and their differences compared to conventional separations.
  • Differentiate between analytical vs. preparative separation approaches.
  • Study and make use of bio-molecule properties for separation purposes.
  • Utilize scientific and engineering principles to solve problems related to bioseparation technologies such as filtration and chromatography
  • Perform basic modeling and design of bioseparation units.

Course Content

Separation processes in biological systems. Enzyme/cell isolation, product enrichment by methods of ion-exchange, filtration, centrifugation, chromatography, reverse-osmosis, precipitation, salting-out, electrophoresis, membrane separations.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the similarities and differences between bio vs. conventional separations.
  • Distinguish between analytical vs. preparative separations based on process objectives.
  • Make use of biomolecule properties in selection and optimization of bioseparation processes.
  • Solve basic design and performance problems in typical bioseparation processes.
