Course Objectives
The course is aimed at developing an understanding of the basics of subsurface system modeling with an emphasis on modeling process and numerical model application.
Course Content
Mathematical models for flow and transport of contaminants in soil and groundwater systems. Analytical and numerical solutions of mathematical models. Stochastic aspects of subsurface flow and contaminants. Case studies and applications of selected computer programs to investigate problems of various complexity. Current research topics and directions.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students will have knowledge in
- mathematical models and processes of subsurface flow and contaminant transport,
- steps of subsurface system modeling process, and
- design and application of numerical flow and transport models (using Visual MODFLOW software) for the assessment of soil and groundwater pollution problems related to water quality management, waste disposal and soil and groundwater remediation.
