Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts and assumptions of factor analysis.
  • Compare and evaluate different factor analytic approaches.
  • Perform exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses

Course Content

Introduction to basic concepts of factor analysis and related statistical methodology with illustrations using empirical data on SPSS and LISREL statistical packages. Topics: relevant matrix algebra and statistics, multiple and partial correlation, structural analysis of correlation matrices, component analysis, common factor models, comparative factor analyses. Exploratory versus confirmatory analysis.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Define key terms and principles in factor analysis
  • Perform relevant matrix operations and statistical calculations necessary for factor analysis.
  • Explain the difference between principal component analysis and common factor models to real datasets.
  • Conduct exploratory factor analysis using SPSS
  • Conduct confirmatory factor analysis using MPLUS, AMOS, or LISREL
  • Interpret the output of factor analyses and assess model fit in confirmatory approaches.
  • Critically evaluate research studies that apply factor analytic techniques, assessing the appropriateness of methods and interpretations.
  • Report factor analysis results according to APA formatting guidelines.
