Course Objectives

This course will study the continuous processes of motor development/behavior and physical growth across the lifespan.  Relationships among growth, maturation, motor performance and the persons’ context will be discussed.  Dynamic Systems and Contextual theoretical approaches to motor development will be discussed and applied. This course considers what it means to teach from a developmental perspective.

 


Course Content

A study of growth and motor development of children from infancy through adolescence Emphasis is on observing, analyzing characteristics of movement behavior and motor performance of children with application to developmentally appropriate movement experiences.


Course Learning Outcomes

1)            Define the principles of motor development and apply them to the learning and

teaching of motor skills.

2)            Explain the basic movements of infancy.            

3)            Identify and assess the movement characteristics of children’s fundamental motor skills using the total body approach.

4)            Identify the interaction between the social and cognitive domains and the motor

domain from a dynamic systems perspective.

5)            Identify the assessment tools for the motor skills. 

6)            Describe the physical growth of an individual from prenatal to adolescence.       

7)            Interpret the impact of physical growth and biological maturity on the motor

performance of young children & adolescents.

8)            Debate and critique current trends and issues in motor development research for Turkey and other countries.

9)            Produce ideas for contributing national and international literature on motor development.

10)          Identify prominent researchers who have contributed significantly to our understanding of developmental processes.

11)          Discuss changes in motor skill development across the lifespan.

12)          Identify and critique major types of developmental research.

13)        Use all kinds of technologies for preparing classroom presentations and research projects.

14)        Work independently and work in a team during the classroom activities.

15)        Demonstrate professionalism and utilize communication skills during the class period.
