Course Objectives
This course will offer students the chance to work on their spoken expression and critical thinking in German. Topics will change each semester but will span film, literature, texts from contemporary German culture. In this course the students develop their knowledge of German culturel history, as well as German language and German fiction. The students read and discuss classic German literature from the 18th to the 20th centruries with their social bakgrounds. The course also includes an introduction to literary terminology and methods.
Course Content
German Civilization in the Middle Ages, in the epoches of Renaissance, Baroque, Enlightenment, Classicism, Romanticism, during the Second German Empire, between 1919-1945, after World War II, between 1965-1990 and after reunification.
Course Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, students will demonstrate:
1.a critical understanding of important aspects of German history and European culture and improved linguistic skills to deal their represantation in different media (textual, visual);
2. the linguistic ability to identify, analyse, and evaluate cultural artefacts within their social, political and historical context including the history of media and knowledge;
3. a better understandig of the processes of the generating and translation of meaning in the use of German for describing and analysing textual materials;
4. the ability to identify ethical, social and literary issues relating topics treated in the course
