Course Objectives

  • Students will critically discuss the theory of communities of practice and its applications; coaching, apprenticeship, and mentoring models; professional CoP in academia; interdisciplinary approaches; and online CoP in higher education.
  • They will critique the literature on communities of practice in higher education in relation to their own research interests from multiple perspectives.
  • They will analyze dynamics of existing non-academic CoPs
  • They will be actively involved in designing and sustaining an academic CoP.
  • They will reflect upon their experiences involving designing or sustaining a CoP.

Course Content

The theory of communities of practice; designing and sustaining communities of practice; academic communities of practice; professional communities of practice for research, teaching and scholarship; online communities of practice; coaching and apprenticeship; adult education in academia; interdisciplinary approaches

Upon completing a course/learning process successfully, students will be able to:

  • Critically discuss CoP theory, research, and practices.
  • Design new academic CoPs based on principles and best practices.
  • Contribute and sustain existing academic CoPs.
