ENLT 524 examines the historical, theoretical, and pedagogical roots of second language (L2) teacher education in terms of: a) the epistemologies that have informed our views of the knowledge-based of teacher education (both general education and the L2 literature), the nature of knowledge, and who is considered to be a knower, b) the theoretical perspectives that have shaped our views of learning in general, and teacher learning in particular, c) the institutional, social, and cultural contexts that impact on teacher learning and language teaching and d) the current innovations and reform movements in teacher education. 

            


Course Content

Examining how language teachers develop professionally; includes key concepts in teacher education; distinction between language teacher education, training and development; teacher cognition and knowledge; teacher beliefs about language teaching and learning; reflective practice and action research; and observation and feedback on teaching.


Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to

  • Assess the scope of and the trends in second language teacher education
  • Critique the issues, debates, and approaches in contemporary second language teacher education
  • Synthesize the epistemological underpinnings of a sociocultural perspective on human learning and how this perspective has to offer the field of second language teacher education
