Course Objectives

This subject aims to familiarise students with:

1) The main genres and theories of language acquisition and development.

2) Multi-faceted aspects of speech perception such as auditory-visual speech perception

3) The how research in speech perception is used in practical areas. The two areas of focus will be speech pathology and foreign language acquisition.


Course Content

This course focuses several aspects of language development: audio-visual speech perception, contemporary models and theories of speech perception and development and developmental language disorders.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this subject, students should be able to:

1) Be familiar with the relevant psychology literature and feel competent in issues pertaining language acquisition and development at undergraduate level.

2) Have a solid awareness of how research in speech perception can profitably be used in applied contexts such as speech pathology, psychopathology and language instruction.

3) Develop ideas of research related to speech perception on theoretical and applied levels in their respective areas – psychology and foreign language instruction.
