Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the student will learn:
- key drivers of supply chain performance
- the complexities of inter-firm and intra-firm coordination
- analytical and problem solving skills necessary to develop solutions for a variety of supply chain management and design problems.
Course Content
This course introduces the concepts, models, and solution tools that are needed in the design, control, and operation of supply chains. The discussion ranges from basic topics of inventory management, logistics network design, distribution systems, strategic alliances, buyer-supplier relationships, the value of information in the supply chain, utilizing readings, cases, and technical exercises.

- Discuss the goal of a supply chain and explain the impact of supply chain decisions on the success of a firm.
- Describe the cycle and push/pull views of a supply chain
- Describe how a company achieves strategic fit between its supply chain strategy and its competitive strategy.
- Identify the key factors to be considered when designing a distribution network and understand the role of network design in a supply chain.
- Understand how online sales have affected the design of distribution networks in different industries.
- Explain different strategies that may be used to mitigate risk in global supply chains.
- Understand the role of forecasting and aggregate planning for both an enterprise and a supply chain.
- Describe supply chain coordination and the bullwhip effect, and their impact on supply chain performance.
- Balance the appropriate costs to choose the optimal lot size and cycle inventory in a supply chain.
- Describe different measures of product availability.
- Understand the role of safety inventory in a supply chain and identify factors that influence the required level of safety inventory.
- Identify the factors affecting the optimal level of product availability and evaluate the optimal cycle service level.
- Understand conditions under which postponement is valuable in a supply chain.
- Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different modes of transportation.
