Course Objectives
The Nationalism in the Balkans until the First World War graduate course aims to provide students with an in-depth analysis of the rise and development of nationalist movements in the Balkan Peninsula during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The course explores the complex relationship between nationalism and the Ottoman Empire, the influence of European ideas, and the distinct paths taken by various Balkan nations such as Serbia, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, and Macedonia. Through an examination of scholarly interpretations, students will engage critically with the historical factors that shaped the emergence of national identities and the political dynamics leading up to the First World War.
Course Content
This course aims to analyse, at the advanced level, the emergence of nationalism and nationalist movements in the Balkans, their external and domestic roots, and establishment of national states in the peninsula during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Analyze the political, social, and cultural landscape of the Balkans under Ottoman rule and how it influenced the rise of nationalism.
Evaluate the impact of Eastern European nationalism on the Balkans and its role in the broader European context.
Examine the development of individual national movements, including Serbian, Greek, Romanian, Bulgarian, Albanian, and Macedonian, identifying key events, figures, and ideologies that shaped each.
Compare and contrast the different nationalist movements in the Balkans, recognizing both their unique characteristics and shared struggles against Ottoman and external domination. Discuss the role of historical narratives, myths, and identity formation in the creation of modern nation-states in the Balkans.
Engage in critical debates regarding the role of nationalism as both a unifying and divisive force in the region, drawing on theoretical and historical perspectives.
Apply secondary source materials to contextualize and critique the development of nationalism in the region.
Synthesize key themes related to nationalism and identity in the Balkans through midterm and final assessments, reflecting on the impact of these movements on the onset of the First World War.
