Course Objectives

This course aims to equip students with the skills necessary to critically analyze historical sources by placing them within their historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts. Students will examine the authors, time periods, and prevailing worldviews that shaped these sources, while also comparing different sources within the same context. The course encourages a comparative approach to understanding historical narratives and historiographical debates.


Course Content

Students will familiarize themselves with the sources of their specific field of interest. Historical sources will be introduced within the historical context in which they were prepared. The sources will be introduced through examining the authors, the time period in which they were written, general worldview of that time and how these problems were reflected in the sources. Different sources within the same context will be compared.

Identify and analyze key historical sources relevant to their field of interest.

Place historical sources within their broader historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts.

Evaluate the perspectives and biases of authors based on their backgrounds and time periods.

Compare different sources within the same historical context to assess variations in interpretation.

Develop critical reading skills for engaging with primary and secondary sources.

Formulate well-supported arguments regarding the reliability, purpose, and significance of historical sources.
