Course Objectives

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the political, economic, and social transformations in Turkey from the 1908 Revolution to the end of World War II. By examining key historical events and debates, students will explore different historiographical perspectives on the Turkish Revolution and its impact on state formation, political ideologies, and economic policies. The course encourages critical engagement with primary and secondary sources to analyze the diverse interpretations of this period.


Course Content

Turkish political and economic history starting from the revolution of 1908 to the end of the Second World War is an historical epoch which this course covers. The course revolves around selected topics in recent Turkish history which have relevance in shaping Turkish politics and the economy in this period. There are readings written from different viewpoints that try to explain Turkish history for the period between 1908 and 1945.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Explain the significance of the 1908 Revolution and its impact on Turkish political and social structures.

Analyze the major political, economic, and social transformations in Turkey from 1908 to 1945.

Compare different historiographical perspectives on the Turkish Revolution.

Assess the role of key historical actors and institutions in shaping Turkish politics and the economy.

Critically engage with  secondary sources to interpret historical developments.

Develop well-reasoned arguments regarding the political and economic legacy of the early Turkish Republic.
