Course Objectives
- To provide students with a foundational understanding of modern Turkish history from the late Ottoman Empire to the present.
- To analyze the political, economic, and cultural transformations that have shaped Turkey’s development.
- To examine the role of key historical figures, institutions, and ideologies in the formation of the Turkish nation-state.
- To explore the interplay between tradition and modernity, as well as the impact of globalization on Turkish society.
- To foster critical thinking and comparative analysis skills by engaging with historical sources and scholarly debates.
Course Content
A survey of contemporary Turkish history designed specifically for METUs exchange and visiting students. It covers the historical, political and cultural developments of modern Turkey from the late 19th century Ottoman Empire to the present. The course introduces historical and socio-political reasons for the establishment of the nation state and economic progress in Turkey and deals with issues of cultural exchange, religion, industrialisation and education.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of major historical events and political developments in modern Turkey.
- Identify and analyze the key factors contributing to the formation of the Turkish Republic and its socio-political evolution.
- Assess the impact of cultural exchange, religion, and industrialization on Turkey’s modernization process.
- Critically evaluate different historiographical perspectives on contemporary Turkish history.
- Apply historical and political analysis to contemporary issues in Turkey.
