Course Objectives
Theme:
Hacking the Institution | Uncomfortable Questions in Architecture*
The course, conducted with participants from various universities, centers broadly around the theme “Hacking the Institution” and aims to foster a critical approach towards the curriculum of architectural education, including but not limited to such issues as studio practice, pedagogy, working conditions, labor organization, economic policies, class contradictions, and gender inequality. It takes the dialogue between graduates and students of architecture as one of the fundamental tools to raise, discuss at manifold levels, and produce further “Uncomfortable Questions” that are often unspoken and overlooked as they disturb and potentially ‘crack’ the prevailing disciplinary norms. Collective production and discussion in class meetings are envisioned to provide an opportunity to interrogate the existing institutional structures of architecture from within such boundaries.
Participants will critically analyze their own positions within their respective institutions (such as academia, internships, architectural firms, corporations, construction sites, NGOs, public institutions, etc.), addressing issues they wish to "hack," topics they feel isolated about, and concerns they are hesitant to discuss. The course will involve an exploration of both theory and practice throughout the semester.
