Course Objectives
This course is designed to cover the basic aspects of the conservation of cultural heritage.
The major objective of the course is to provide knowledge on:
- general aspects of history and theory of conservation
- basic terminology and concepts in conservation
- legal and administrative aspects of conservation in Turkey
- understanding and evaluation of historic buildings: values, problems and potentials
- understanding and evaluation of urban and archaeological sites: values, problems and potentials
- new interventions in historic context
Course Content
The course aims to provide the students of architecture with the basic knowledge and understanding of the cultural heritage and its conservation.

Knowledge
- introduction to heritage conservation, basic terms and concepts
- legal administrative aspects of conservation of the cultural heritage in Turkey
- different categories of the cultural heritage: buildings (monument/dwelling) and sites (cultural landscape,
- urban/rural, archaeological, industrial and modern heritage)
- local traditions, behaviors and attitudes of stakeholders towards heritage conservation
Skills
- understanding and assessing (values, problems and potentials) the heritage place/building with its tangible and intangible properties and components
- develop a conservation proposal for the heritage place/building, considering its future use and existing context
- understanding the physical, functional and visual components of the heritage site and its context
- assessing the heritage site in its context and developing vision, proposals and new interventions for its conservation and sustainability,
Attitudes
- developing awareness and consciousness towards heritage places and their conservation
- awareness on contemporary conservation issues in Turkey and all the world.
- developing awareness architectural and urban properties of the heritage place
- developing awareness towards the impact of different interventions on the heritage places considering physical, social and economic aspects
- creating sensitivity about the relation between user and heritage places
- developing ethical and social responsibility about conservation of heritage places
- development of a consciousness of heritage places and their transformation
