Course Objectives
The course aims to provide the students:
- a brief chronological outline and development of house types and private life in European History
- familiarity with concepts used to study domestic architecture
- an understanding of the spatial and social use of house and private space in historical contexts
- knowledge on cultural and artistic developments and material culture of historical periods
Course Content
A contextual and thematic survey on the development of domestic architecture in the ancient Greek and Roman periods. The course covers the architectural and spatial design of houses, household practices and social rituals.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students are expected to demonstrate:
- knowledge of house typology and private life in history
- distinguish and comment on the design and use of house as private/public sphere; cultural context of historical periods; types of evidence, sources and prominent and/or representative case-studies
- relate interdisciplinary knowledge and architectural design
- apply the knowledge acquired in the course to develop a comparative perspective and a critical understanding of studying domestic architecture in architectural history.
