Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to

  • Distinguish between the types of mathematical knowledge (mathematical content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and technological pedagogical content knowledge).
  • Describe the misconceptions that students may have, and generates the ways of covering these misconceptions.
  • Predict students’ mathematical misconceptions and take this into consideration while organizing lessons.
  • Relate pedagogical content knowledge to mathematical content knowledge and technological pedagogical content knowledge.
  • Appraise developing technological pedagogical content knowledge by following the developments in integrating technology into mathematics teaching.
  • Appraise developing her/his conceptual knowledge.
  • Appraise supporting her/his procedural knowledge with underlying reasoning.
  • Appraise developing her/his relational understanding rather than instrumental understanding.
  • Appraise guiding students to relationally understand conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge.

Course Content

Focus on the questions regarding the nature of mathematical knowledge needed in mathematics teaching. Exploring mathematical content knowledge and its relationship to pedagogical content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge. Investigation of the nature of knowledge types through theoretical foundations and practical implications.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students completing this course will have a critical understanding of teacher knowledge to teach school mathematics and related frameworks explaining mathematics teacher knowledge. They are expected to

  • learn the reasons of mathematical misconceptions
  • learn how to overcome of mathematical misconceptions
  • recognize the nature of mathematical knowledge needed in mathematics teaching.
  • have a deep understanding of the role of mathematical content knowledge in mathematics teaching.
  • have a deep understanding of the role of pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics teaching.
