Course Objectives

This course aims to help PSTs know the basics of science, technology, society (STS) interaction

This course aims to help PSTs understand socioscientific issues by using informal reasoning.


Course Content

A course targets to introduce students with alternative views of science and technology through reading materials outside of education, such as sociology and history of science, to reveal the meaning of STS based science education instruction, to present the rationale of such an approach, to help students to compare STS approach in science education with traditional approaches, to create STS based lesson plans and to develop students’ intellectual accumulation related to science, technology and society.


Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course PSTs are able to

Define science, technology, and society Identify the interaction among science, technology, and society

Exemplify socioscientific issues from daily life

Identify different types of reasoning used in negotiation of socioscientific issues

Utilize argumentation skills (claim, justification, and rebuttal) in making decisions on socioscientific issues.
