Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the students will:
- explain traditional and contemporary counseling and psychotherapy theories
- recognize the importance of understanding advantages and disadvantages of various theories
- critically evaluate the existing theories
- discuss and analyze fundamental techniques associated with theoretical models
- explore the importance of linking theory with practice
- demonstrate ethical knowledge as it applies to counseling services
Course Content
Introduction and overview of the counseling theories in terms of the emphasis placed upon the cognitive, affective and behavioral domains. Comparison of basic philosophies, key concepts, goals of counseling; development of relationship between counselor and client; clients and counselors work and techniques of various approaches in counseling.
Course Learning Outcomes
In this course students will learn:
- Major counseling theories used by a variety of mental health practitioners and school counselors. Historical foundations of major counseling theories,
- Application of theories to different settings including multicultural settings,
- Skills and techniques employed by practitioners using those theories, and strengths and weaknesses of theories.
