  • Understand the history and philosophy of the counseling profession
  • Recognize relationship between school counseling and the broader counseling profession
  • Understand concepts, terms regarding  counseling, particularly as used in schools
  • Recognize roles and responsibilities of school counselors
  • Understand comprehensive school counseling program 
  • Recognize major counseling approaches
  • Understand individual and group counseling process
  • Understand effective use of counseling skills
  • Know assessment  methods in counseling
  • Recognize counseling services regarding educational and career development
  • Understand consultation in schools
  • Know career development services in schools
  • Understand research, program evaluation in advancing the counseling profession and program effectiveness

Course Content

An introduction to basic concepts of guidance and counseling; historical background and development of the field; basic functions of the counseling and guidance services; roles and functions of school counselors; basic counseling and guidance techniques utilized by counselors.

  • Describe how historical, cultural and social events impacted the field of counseling
  • Explain the relationship between school counseling and the broader counseling profession
  • Describe  basic concepts, terms, principles regarding counseling in schools
  • Understand that school counseling and counseling programs can be central to the mission and success of each school
  • Point out how to cooperate with various stakeholders in schools in the process of counseling and guidance
  • Distinguish counseling theories
  • Describe the individual and group counseling process
  • Demonstrate an understanding and effective use of counseling skills
  • Demonstrate characteristics of the effective  helper  empathy, genuineness, unconditional positive regard, open-mindedness, respect and competence
  • Critique on qualities that support and hinder being  a counselor 
  • Explain the importance various of assessmentmethods used in  school counseling
