Course Objectives

This course is designed mainly to introduce the students to the evolution of Turkey’s international relations since the establishment of the republic and particularly the principal issues of contemporary Turkish foreign policy. The period from 1960 until nowadays will be the second part of this lecture. Special attention will be paid to the impact of the changes in the international system as well as the domestic context of foreign policymaking. Structures, actors, and processes of Turkish foreign policy will be examined through different periods and issues.


Course Content

The course aims to identify and analyze various factors contributing to Turkey’s foreign policy orientation. While the main focus of this course is the political dynamics and issues of Turkish foreign policy after World War II, the problems and determinants of Turkish foreign policy between 1919-1945, with reference to past experiences and geopolitical imperatives placing certain constraints on the state’s decision makers, will also be briefly discussed.
