Course Coordinator: | Lecturer Dr. İHSAN CİHAN AYANOĞLU |
Offered Semester: | Fall and Spring Semesters. |
Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce undergraduate biological sciences students to the world of biological data and statistics to gain an understanding of how data is collected and interpreted. The course will include the basics of probability, hypothesis testing, and statistical analysis methods. Students will also learn to use the R programming language while carrying out analyses.
Course Content
Statistical methodology in collecting and analyzing biological data. Elementary probability distributions, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, analysis of frequencies with emphasis on the use of computers in processing data in biological sciences.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Know that she/he needs to form an expectation before he/she obtains the result
2. Describe some theoretical distributions
3. List some of the basic statistical methods
4. Distinguish and classify different patterns of biostatistical questions
5. Identify the statistical methods to be employed on different biostatistical questions
6. Describe the assumptions of the statistical methods
7. Outline the procedures of the methods
8. Calculate the necessary statistics to answer the questions
9. Interpret the obtained results
10. Design experiments to answer biostatistical questions
11. Create scenarios where alternative methods can be used to answer similar questions
12. Know that statistical decisions can never be absolutely free of errors
