Course Objectives
Students will comprehend the importance of the communication media in society and the sociological parameters of the phenomenon of mass communication both in theoretical and applied terms.
Course Content
An examination of mass communication theories. Discussion on the mass media of communication and their role as social institutions; content, audience and the effect of the mass media. The functions of communications media in the formation of public opinion, cultural values and social control. Analysis of examples from both early studies and current research.
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Students will make sense of the mass media of communication and their role as social institutions, their social functions, effects and changing forms.
2. Students will illustrate the different theoretical approaches to mass media and communications, and relate it to contemporary media environment.
3. Students will locate the importance of the media in today’s society, focusing on changing social relationships, political organization forms, inequality patterns, as well as the impacts of globalization.
