Course Objectives
The primary objective of this course is to teach students the fundamentals of drafting and graphic presentation through hand-drawing. The course emphasizes drawing as visual communication.
Course Content
Representing ideas visually can be a powerful tool in helping urban planners and designers explain complex policies and proposals, and take control of the planning and design process. This course is designed for first year undergraduate students. Through a series of lectures and drawing exercises, the course examines conventions for depicting space, form, and information as used by urban planners and designers.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the semester, students are expected to:
- gain familiarity with basic terminologies, media, instruments, and techniques of hand-drawing as used in urban planning and design
- develop an appreciation and rigor of producing high-quality, precise, and well-crafted work
- improve their line-drawing and texturing skills
- improve their sketching skills
- improve their lettering skills
- construct pictorial systems in a confident manner
- learn how to represent various information at different scales
