Course Objectives
By the end of the course the students will be able to:
1. comprehend different approaches, methods and techniques used in the field of English Language Teaching
2. apply different English language teaching approaches, methods and techniques to different educational settings and to different groups of learners in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) / English as a Second Language (ESL) learning environments
3. critically analyze the benefits and shortcomings of different language learning approaches, methods and techniques in a given EFL/ESL learning environment
4.evaluate the effectiveness of a given language teaching approach, method and/or technique for a given EFL/ ESL learner profile.
Course Content
Examining approaches and methods such as Grammar Translation, Direct, Audiolingual Methods, Communicative Approach, the Natural Approach and techniques in English language teaching from a historical viewpoint; presentation of examples.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to :
a) to develop an in-depth understanding of former and current approaches, methods and techniques in English Language Teaching (ELT)
b) to raise awareness about the connection of ELT to theories of psychology, educational sciences, linguistics and sociology
c).to develop a critical stance towards the integration of different language teaching approaches,methods and techniques into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes
d) to develop an in-depth understanding of the theories of learning and teaching, the teacher and learner roles, the design of the instructional materials, and the assessment procedures pertinent to various approaches, methods and techniques used in English language teaching
e) to evaluate the effectiveness of different approaches, methods and techniques used in particular EFL settings with different learner profiles
