Course Objectives

At the end of this course students will…

-produce intelligible and accurate English

-understand rapidly spoken English more easily

-improve their pronunciation skills at a segmental and non-segmental level

-improve their listening and speaking skills in academic and everyday contexts

 

 


Course Content

Developing students` speaking and listening skills with a variety of activities; listening to authentic English passages, conversations, poems, etc. on tape with emphasis on interaction-based activities that involve students in active communication.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be able to

-use receptive and productive skills for effective communication

-speak English more fluently

-comprehend different native and non-native English accents

-learn to tolerate ambiguity due to the number of unknown vocabular items

-focus on the overall meaning of utterances

-learn the IPA

-transcribe words according to IPA

-know the importance of stress, intonation and linking in effective communication

-learn the importance of pronunciation in effective communication

-make a distinction between colloquial and everyday language

-carry out conversations in English without worrying about their fluency and accuracy

-follow academic lectures in English more easily
