STAT561 PANEL DATA ANALYSIS

Course Code:2460561
METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):3 (3.00 - 0.00)
ECTS Credit:8.0
Department:Statistics
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Graduate
Course Coordinator:Prof.Dr. ÖZLEM İLK DAĞ
Offered Semester:Fall or Spring Semesters.

Course Objectives

Longitudinal data occurs when repeated measures are taken from the same subject over a short period of time. It used to be known as panel data as well, but in the recent years, some fields started to distinguish these two terms. Recently, some researchers use the term longitudinal when data are collected for 3 to almost 12 time points; while they use the term panel when there are almost 20 to 50 time points. This course is intended to introduce students with exploratory and confirmatory analysis of longitudinal data. Students will be able to analyze such complex data structures, which bears within subject correlations, in the future.

Course Content

Introduction to panel data. Missing cases in panel data. Exploratory panel data analysis. Marginal models, transition models, random effects models, multilevel (hierarchical) models. Estimation methods for this type of data.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students are expected to:

  • explore a longitudinal data through descriptive statistics and graphics,
  • model such a complex structure through most commonly used models,
  • learn how to deal with missing longitudinal data through some simple methods
