Course Objectives

This course is the first part of “introduction to probalility and statistics”. We will cover the following subtopics of statistics: Descriptive statistics, probabability, combinatorial methods, conditional probability, random variables, univariate, bivariate distributions, expectation, variance, covariance, correlation, some useful distributions, central limit theorem and estimation.

Course Content

Experiments and events. Set theory. Axioms and basic theorems of probability. Finite sample spaces and counting techniques. Independent events. Conditional probability. Random variables and distributions. Expectation, variance, covariance and correlation. Some special distributions.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful participation in this course, students will be able to:
1. Quantitatively describe data and their distributions.
2. Calculate and interpret probabilities.
3. Get basic understanding on the theory of sampling distributions and their usage.
4. Learn to bridge from sample to population by using estimation theory.

5.Interpret and articulate these results..
