Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to assure the student be able to understand the main points of a clear standard speech on topics that are familiar to him/her; he/she will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise when traveling in an area where the language of study is spoken; he/she will be able to write simply connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest to him/her; the student will also be able to describe difficulties, experiences, events, desires and wishes, as well as justify briefly his/her opinions. By the end of this course students can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. 

 


Course Content

This course is the forth of Spanish language courses offered by METU Modern Languages. Admission to this course is reserved for those who have studied the previous courses. For the students who did not study this course at METU, but have the necessary knowledge, the acceptance depends on the course capacity availability. In this course students continue to develop and improve their writing, reading, oral expression and comprehension skills. Emphasis will be placed on essential grammatical structures and the development of communication skills on the topics of content. The course is offered in the fall and spring semesters.


Course Learning Outcomes

Unit 4: "¿Cómo va todo?".

By the end of this unit students will be able:

-to interact in coded situations such as invitations, introductions, greetings, and farewells

-to ask for things, actions and favors

-to ask for and give permission

-to give excuses and justify oneself 

In addition:

-The grammar topics of this unit will include: gerund (regular and irregular forms), estar+gerund, and the conditional tense.

-The vocabulary of this unit will be related to greetings and farewells, verbs used for courtesy such as poder, importar, ayudar, and poner, as well as other commonly employed verbs such as dar, dejar, and prestar.

 

Unit 6: "No como carne".

By the end of this unit students will be able:

- to talk about likes and eating habits

- to explain how to give recipes

In addition:

-The grammar topics of this unit will include: los pronombres personales de OD, las formas impersonales con se, algunos usos de ser y estar, usos de y, pero, y además.

-The vocabulary of this unit will be related to food, recipes, as well as the measurements and weights when buying food.

 

Unit 8: "Estamos muy bien".

By the end of this unit students will be able:

- to talk about health, describe the possible discomforts they may have

- to give advice

In addition:

-The grammar topics of this unit will include: usos de los verbos ser y estar, verbo doler, forma y algunos usos del imperativo afirmativo.

-The vocabulary of this unit will be related to body parts, emotional states, health problems and their symptoms.

 

Unit 9: "Antes y ahora".

By the end of this unit students will be able:

- to talk about habits, traditions and circumstances of  past times and compare them with the present 

- how to argue and debate

In addition:

-The grammar topics of this unit will include el pretérito imperfecto, ya no / todavía, marcadores temporales para el pasado, marcadores temporales para el presente.

-The vocabulary topics will be related to trips, historical times and periods of life.

 

Unit 10: "Momentos especiales".

By the end of this unit students will be able:

- to narrate the past

- to order past events

- to express emotions

In addition:

-The grammar topics of this unit will include formas irregulares del pretérito indefinido, el contraste entre el pretérito indefinido y el imperfecto, las formas del pasado de estar + gerundio y los marcadores temporales para relatar.

-The vocabulary will be related to historical events and emotions.

 

Some specific contents from units 5 and 7, which are mostly review lessons, will also be seen this term.
