Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to assure the student be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. By the end of this course students can express themselves on studied topics using everyday expressions and very basic formulas.


Course Content

This course is the first of Spanish language courses offered by METU Modern Languages. Admission to this course is reserved exclusively for those who have never studied Spanish before. This course provides an introduction to the Spanish language and cultural aspects of Spanish speaking world. Students will begin to acquire basic skills in writing, reading, oral expression and comprehension. Emphasis will be placed on essential grammatical structures and the development of basic communication skills on the topics of content. The course is offered in the fall and spring semesters and in the summer school as well.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be able to

 

  • spell his/her name, surname, address or other personal details.

  • establish basic social contact by using the simplest everyday forms of greetings and farewells; introductions; saying please, thank you, sorry etc.

  • recognize familiar names, words and very basic phrases in the most common everyday situations like giving and asking personal details such as name, nationality, age, profession, marital status etc.

  • describe him/herself, what he/she does, where he/she lives etc.

  • ask and answer simple questions about themselves and other people, where they live, what they do, things they have etc.

  • use simple phrases and very simple sentences to describe his/her family or people he/she knows.

  • ask and answer simple questions about likes, dislikes, preferences about vacations.

  • produce simple phrases to describe a place.

  • interact in a simple way to talk about necessities and needs in the context of shopping.

  • link words or group of words with very basic linear connectors like “and”, “because”, or “so”.

  • handle numbers, quantities and cost.
