Course Objectives

PSYC100 General Psychology aims to:

  • Get non-psychology program students familiarised with the main subfields of psychology, such as perception, learning, memory, personality theories, psychopathology, social and developmental psychology.
  • Improve the perception of psychology as a discipline in a way that they understand that it is the study of human behaviour and mental processes and uses the scientific methods akin to those used in other scientific fields.
  • Create and advance knowledge base of psychology among students who are majoring in other fields in a way that they can utilise this knowledge in their professional careers.

Course Content

This course aims to provide a general overview of theoretical and empirical areas of literature in psychology for non-psychology students. Students are exposed to major areas of psychology such as physiological psychology, developmental psychology, learning, memory and perception, personality and social psychology, and psychopathology. Individual instructors may tailor the course in accordance with the needs of the students taking the course. (Elective for non-Psychology Program students).

On the successful completion of this course, students are expected to be familiar with what psychology is, as a science with its applied sub-fields, its areas of specialisation as well as its scope and methods.
