-       Familiarizing with autobiographical and vicarious memory development, life story narratives literatures

-       Experiencing how to recruit adolescent participants, collect data via online procedures

-       Developing interviewing skills

-       Developing an understanding about how mixed-method studies including both qualitative and quantitative parts in the field of developmental research is conducted

Course Content

Aims to involve the students in a typical research activity in their field of interest in psychology. Research design, data collection, data analysis, and writing up a research report are involved. The workshop courses offered for each area, along with the course codes are announced each semester.

Course Learning Outcomes

Grading, Evaluation and Responsibilities

There are 4 main parts to the responsibilities in this course:

1.)   Participant Recruitment Process: You have two options for participant recruitment process:

A.   In the first option (without proposal), you will find 6 adolescents

                                               i.    They must be aged between 14-18 during data collection. (Highschool students)

ii.    They will participate 3 sessions of online meeting (1st and 2nd meeting within this semester (Time 1), 3rd meeting in 6 months later than 1st meeting (Time 2))

iii.    Their best/close friend will be joining in the 2nd meeting

iv.    They shouldn’t have a current psychological diagnosis such as depression, and atypical developmental problems.

                                             v.    Half of the participants you find (3) should be girls, and ages should equally vary (you may balance it with your class mates)

vi.    You will have the first contact with the participants and describe the study, check for inclusion criteria, and collecting informed consents and parental approvals, confirm friends participation

In the second option (with proposal), you will find 5 adolescents (whose friends will join 2nd meeting) and prepare a research proposal that is explained in detail below.

                                               i.     A min. 25- max. 40-page proposal (approximately including 12 pages introduction, 7-8 pages method, 1-2 pages proposed analytical strategy, 7-8 pages references)

1.     Find a topic about autobiographical memory development in adolescence, or vicarious memory development, or memory conversations of friends during adolescence

2.     Conduct a detailed literature review about the topic of interest, and write a comprehensive introduction section of the study

3.     Clearly identified DVs and IVs

4.     Write at least three main research questions

5.     Write a detailed method section, through which you provide your research design. In this section, I’d expect you to write about anticipated number of participants and their characteristics (life-span participants), measure(s) that will be used (e.g. giving scales, video-recording or audio-recording a conversation, etc.), adopted coding schemes, the research procedure, and proposed analytical strategy

6.     Follow the APA format (Please check the updates for APA 7!)

You need to choose one option now. However, you may change it later until the end of semester.

! Participant recruitment will start in the beginning of March!

2.)   Attending class meetings:

a)      Participation in training sessions and role plays

b)      Reading assigned articles and reflecting on them

c)      Discussing methodology and theoretical background of the articles

Note: Participation in training sessions is MANDATORY and it is a PREREQUISITE for data collection!!!

3.)  Recording an Example Zoom Video: Every student will record a roleplay of zoom video meeting with 1 individual acting as an example of adolescence

Note: If you can recruit additional participants for the study, which means more than 6, you will be given stronger recommendation letters when necessary.

4.)   Reaction Papers: You will be required to complete three reaction papers (every two to three weeks) throughout the semester. For each article under the course documents on Odtuclass, you are expected to write a one to two pages long reaction paper (double-spaced). Please do not exceed two pages.

For each reaction paper, you are expected to focus on:

?   The main research question(s) or issue in the paper (What is the main focus of the paper)

?   Which main ideas the paper proposes in terms of literature review

?   Take-home messages – the gist of the paper

These papers are related to the course material and should help you to have a further understanding on the subject matter. The dates of these assignments are marked on the class- schedule.

All papers will be submitted electronically via Turnitin (www.turnitin.com). Late papers will NOT be accepted. This rule is very strict; please do not leave the submissions to the last minute.
