Course Objectives

1. To familiarise students with the nature and scope of the international legal system

2. To gain an understanding of the basic principles of some of the major areas of public international law

3. To facilitate critical analysis on the role of international law and the political and economic contexts in which it operates

4. To cultivate the students’ ability to identify and analyse some of the contemporary issues involved in international legal regulation


Course Content

An introductory course, dealing with sources of international law, states, individuals, recognition, international agreements, international responsibilities of states, peaceful settlement of international disputes, theory and reality in modern law of war, coercive measures, laws of land and serial warfare, laws of maritime warfare, enemy persons and property within belligerent states, neutral states, termination of war.

Understand the nature of public international law, its role in the international political and economic environment, and the main legal concepts applicable to international relations

Use skills in interpretation & understanding, critical analysis, and communication
