Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will

  • Know historical transformation of the Social Science disciplines with a focus on the separation and relation between Sociology and Politics fields. 
  • Learn diverse transformations of the social and political fields separately and in relation to each other.
  • Understand classical theories and basic debates of Sociology and Political Science.
  • Become familiar with contemporary thinking in Political Science and Sociology.

Course Content

This course provides the introductory conceptual framework for the study of politics and the changing social world. Definition of the basic concepts of authority, power, ideology, socialization, stratification, culture and gender will be combined with the examination of the basic approaches in the socilogical theory and political science.

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • link Sociology and Politics and use the theories, concepts, methods in their analysis
  • exhibit the knowledge and understanding, and the skills noted above, in assessed essays, class discussions and exams
  • develop the skills of note taking from lectures, books and articles and of essay writings.
