Course Objectives
At the end of this course, students will learn
- the fundamentals of the electronic structure of matter in the solid state.
- to apply these principles to some applications such as transport, semiconductors and magnetism.
Course Content
Energy bands, p-n junctions, Fermi surfaces, electron dynamics in external fields, optical properties, dielectric properties, magnetic properties.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students who pass this course will be able to
- have a good understanding of the implications of discrete translation symmetry on the quantum mechanical behavior of crystals,
- do advanced calculations of energy levels for different crystal symmetries and at different model levels, for instance weak periodic potential and tight binding,
- understand electron transport at the Boltzmann level,
- have a basic understanding of semiconductors,
- have a basic understanding of magnetic materials.
